Tips on Caring for the Alzheimer's Patient

By Nancy L. Young-Houser. Two choices are available for those whose loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease: care for them within the home or having them cared for in a nursing facility. Eventually they will be completely unable to care for themselves. Either way, ignoring memory loss, confusion, and agitation in the Alzheimer's patient will bring about their premature placement in a nursing facility and eventually developing health problems for the caregiver due to stress and frustration.

Genetics and Alzheimer's disease—What to Look For

By Nancy L. Young-Houser. Individuals who have Alzheimer's disease in their family line have a much higher risk than the general population does for developing the disease. The highest statistic is for someone who has a parent or sibling diagnosed with Alzheimer's, raising their risk approximately 3.5 times as likely to get it. With each additional relative, this risk will increase.

Diabetes Drug Grown in Tobacco Plants

By Nancy L. Young-Houser. Recently European researchers announced they had produced a certain type of tobacco plant which contains a "potent anti-inflammatory protein" called interleukin-10 (IL-10). The purpose of this plant is to help insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes patients, in addition to those with autoimmune diseases. The agrochemical companies of Bayer and Syngenta have been researching ways to make complex protein drugs in plants for awhile, but up until now have been pretty much unsuccessful.

Effects of Quitting Smoking

By Nancy L. Young-Houser. It's pretty hard to have a positive attitude about quitting smoking after putting a lot of time and money into a hard-earned habit of 50-years. To know how serious this habit is, remember the words of Mark Twain, "Quitting smoking is easy. I've done it a thousand times".
