To Buy or Not to Buy That New Computer
Submitted by: Lynda Forman
The shiny new computers are everywhere, it seems. From the Internet advertisements to the inserts in your local paper, it seems all of the latest desktops and laptops are offering more than you could ever want (or need) from a computer and for far less than you thought you´d have to pay. It´s almost too tempting to resist, but still, the state of your job and the economy at large is making you question this decision.
The Case for Something New
If you´re running a business from home, you´re probably on your computer nearly every second of the day. You´re checking your website, checking the orders, and communicating with both clients and vendors. If your computer isn´t working, neither are you. When you want to be competitive in your chosen field, you need to make sure your software and your equipment is up to date – especially when dealing with graphics and complex programming. Needless to say, this means you need to update your computer constantly. When you´re using your computer for everything in your business, you don´t have time for breakdowns or for setbacks with software disagreements. For this type of business or use, you need to make sure you have at least one computer which is less than 6 months old. This way, you can always be assured that one computer is ready to work when the other one fails. Of course, this can be a costly computer replacement schedule, but if you´re doing a large amount of business, it´s an investment you can not afford to avoid. The Case for Something Old
On the other hand, smaller businesses or those which deal with only writing or spreadsheet management might not need to upgrade their equipment or their software as regularly. In these cases, you might be able to ´get away´ with a new computer only every 3 to 4 years. What you might want to do is to look at the software you generally use. If it doesn´t need to change or it can be updated online without any new physical installation steps, you should be able to get away with your current computer´s setup. Or you might be able to look into refurbished computers for that ´almost new´ quality without the new price tag. If you´re still not sure you need a new computer, but you´ve noticed things have been ´off´ in your daily work, you might just need to bring your hard drive or laptop into a computer repair store. It might just be that a virus has infiltrated your system and it needs to be flushed out. Or you might just need a new part that costs far less than a new system would. When You MUST Buy Something New
If your computer is causing you troubles each and every day, it´s time to start looking into a new system. You´re spending too much time dealing with a broken computer and not enough time with your business, and that´s going to cost you more money in the long run than a computer ever will. Several signs an upcoming trip to the computer store is necessary include: multiple daily crashes, files go missing, the fan is running too hard, software programs don´t work, etc.* * * * *
