With the rising cost of healthcare and health insurance, it´s no wonder more people are looking for ways to prevent diseases. Thankfully, your body is well-equipped to handle a variety of illnesses without much intervention on your part, but it never hurts to lend a helping hand to your body´s immune system. By taking the time to nurture your body, you can spend more time doing the things you love to do, and less time sitting in bed, waiting to feel better again.

Sleep Restores Your Body

When we finally close our eyes at night, it might seem like our bodies are shutting down, but this is far from the truth. Each night, our bodies activate healing processes that repair damage done to cells during the day. If we´re not getting enough sleep at night, our bodies aren´t able to have the energy to complete these tasks in addition to not having enough time to strengthen our cells and our organs. It´s recommended that adults get at least 6 hours of sleep each night, ideally between 7 and 8 hours.

Eating Right = Feeling Great

Just as your body needs rest, it also needs the right fuel in order to have the maximum immune system function. Make sure to eat from all of the major food groups – meats, vegetables, fruits, dairy, and whole grains – each and every day. In addition, cutting out the sugar and the fat will also help to make your immune system strong than ever. While there´s nothing wrong with an occasional treat or an occasional splurge, choosing healthy meals over unhealthy meals is going to prevent illness in the long term.

Wash Your Hands Again

Germs and bacteria are everywhere we look – even if we can´t see them. To help prevent the spread of illnesses like influenza and the common cold, we need to be more vigilant about stopping the spread of these germs. Simply washing your hands for one minute before touching your eyes or your mouth will help reduce your risk of becoming ill. You can also use those hand sanitizers when a sink isn´t available. This is especially the case in the winter months when more people stay inside, touching everything around them.

Staying Active For Health

And your body also needs regular exercise in order to keep your blood moving. Not only does this help to facilitate good circulation and to increase your energy, but your body will also be able to work more efficiently when it is strong and active. It has been shown that regular exercisers experience far fewer colds and flus each year than those who do not exercise. And this doesn’t mean you have to run marathons to stay in shape. Just a 30 minute walk each day will help keep you free from sniffles. No matter how often you´ve been sick in the past, you can follow these guidelines to start experiencing fewer sick days. Your body is a marvelous machine that can take care of you – but only if you take care of it too.
