Whether you´re looking to cut down your credit card debt or you want to (finally) start building up a nest egg, cutting your costs and your spending is the only way to achieve your goal. And in order to start, you need to ask yourself some tough questions about your budget. However, the good news is that there are 5 easy ways to save $100 each and every month, adding up to $1200 saved a year.

#1 – Look at Your Cupboards

Most of us buy groceries more often than we should. We tend to have ideas as to what we can cook during the week, but then plans fall apart when we are busy or our schedules change. As a result, our cupboards tend to be full of items we´ve bought, but have not eaten. Each month, take a few days to eat only what is in your house – and you´ll save money while also unstuffing your cabinets.

#2 – Add Up Those Extra Charges

If you´re trying to save money, you need to pay less out to your bill collectors. But instead of not sending your checks each month, it´s time to look at your billing statements to see what you´re paying and how you might be able to cut things down. Call up your bill collectors to see what those additional charges (you know, the ones you don´t recognize) are for and how you can get them eliminated or reduced.

#3 – Buy Gas at the Beginning of the Week

Most gas stations will drop their prices on gas at the beginning of the week as many people travel on the weekends and will be filling up before they head out. To save cash, make sure to fill up your tank at the beginning of the week before the prices jump up again.

#4 – Get Rid of Your Daily Latte

We all know that those high priced coffee shops are fun to visit, but when you want to save money, they´re places to avoid. Instead of choosing a high priced drink, opt for a traditional coffee and then add milk or cream at the end from the condiment bar. Or you might want to head to your local gas station when coffee drinks can be far cheaper. But think of it this way – a $5 every Monday through Friday is $100 a month. Maybe you should just brew at home for a fraction of the price.

#5 – Balance Your Checkbook

Many of us don´t know what we´re spending and how we´re potentially wasting money because we avoid looking at our finances unless we absolutely have to. Instead, look your bills in the eyes and make sure to balance your checkbook every day. That way, you won´t have any ´surprises´ at the end of the month. In the end, your money is your money. But the more disciplined you are, the more you will have to spend on the things you really want – a comfortable retirement, for example. While saving a lot may not be possible right now, saving a little on a consistent basis will add up.
