Do You Really Need to Cut Back Your Spending?
Submitted by: Lynda Forman
Times are tough right now – no question about it. With the problems of the economy and the losses of jobs, people are more conscious than ever of their spending and of their bank accounts. But are the news reports right? Do you really need to cut back your spending right now? After all, if you´re not doing badly right now, and you still have a job, does it really matter how you spend your money?
Making Cents?
It never hurts to take a few minutes to find out more about your finances. Most of us don´t really look at what we´re spending on a daily basis, often leading to financial troubles down the road. Right now, take a piece of paper and write down all of the different sources of income you have each month. In another column, write out all the expenses you have each month, including credit card payments, loan payments, food expenses, etc. Total up both of these columns and then see what the difference is between the two. If you are spending more than you are making, chances are good you are dipping into your savings or you´re spending on those credit cards. If you find you have money left over at the end of each month, congratulations! Now, why not put it in a savings account or a money market account? If not, it´s time to read on.It All Adds Up
When you find you´re spending more than you´re making, it´s time to make changes. Even though you might not be feeling the financial pinch, chances are good you might in the future should anything catastrophic happen. Think about all the horror stories of the unexpected medical bills – do you want to be in that position? The first thing you need to do is to look at the expenses you have each month. Is there anything you can cut down or cancel altogether? Some things you might be able to do without include: DVD subscription services, cable TV, magazine subscriptions, etc. Think of things you could live without for now and call up the companies to cancel them. Next, look at the expenses you have that you can control – utilities, for example. Are there ways you can cut down on the costs there? You might want to turn the thermostat down a few degrees in the winter, or perhaps you can add some insulation to your windows to help block out the drafts. Some people have also found it useful to start tracking their expenses on a daily basis to find ways to cut out that extra latte or store bought sandwich – everything counts.Cutting Back for Good?
What´s interesting about these financial checkups with your budget is that you´re not only learning to cut back your spending now, but you´re creating habits that will help you in the future as well. While this poor economy situation can´t last forever, the way you choose to spend your money now can and will affect your future financial health. Why not create good habits now? After all, you do want to retire some day, don´t you?* * * * *
