Just like having a child, your pet is going to have times when they are sick too. But you might want to know when you need to actually take your cat to the vet and when you may be able to treat them at home. Unfortunately, trips to the pet doctor can become quite expensive, so avoiding these appointments may be on your list of ways to reduce your spending. Here are some questions to ask yourself before you call up the vet for an appointment.

Is This an Emergency?

If your cat is bleeding, is acting strangely, or is simply unresponsive, this is the sign of a very sick cat. You should get to your vet as quickly as possible or to the nearest animal emergency hospital. Chances are your cat needs immediate attention and medications that you simply can't provide for them on your own. Cats should also be taken to the animal emergency center if they were hit by a car or if they ingested something poisonous, even if they aren't acting strangely yet. When you're not sure if it's an emergency, it's a good idea to call your vet to see what they recommend you do. Often, they will have you bring your cat in for a regular appointment just to check on them, especially if your cat isn't acting the way they normally do.

How are They Acting?

One of the best indicators of pet health is pet behavior. If your cat is eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom as they normally do, chances are good that whatever seems to be wrong is nothing serious. Even if your cat is sneezing, they might be able to simply get over the cold without any intervention. It's when your cat isn't sleeping, isn't eating, and isn't going to the bathroom that you need to worry. These are basic life functions they need to be able to do to survive. If you've noticed odd behaviors, you need to watch your cat for a few hours to see how they behave. This way, you have something to tell the vet should your cat become worse and you can see if they're simply acting strangely for no apparent reason. That happens too. For example, your cat might look like they're twitching their head, but as you watch them, you notice they have an itchy spot on their ear that they take care of without incident.

Do I Ever Need to Take My Cat to the Vet?

Some cat owners never take their cat to the vet, but this is not recommended either. Your cat does need to have checkups from time to time to ensure they are at a healthy weight and that their shots are up to date. Along with those benefits, you can begin to establish a strong connection to your vet, a relationship that will help when your cat is truly sick and in need of assistance.
