Do You Have What It Takes to be a Freelance Writer?
Submitted by: Lynda Forman
The world of a freelance writer is an exciting one. Not only do you get to use your creativity to make money, but since you are working for yourself, you get to set your hours, your work pace, and your work attire. Many people today are just starting to think about this exciting job market, and with many openings available and assignments to complete, it´s not hard to make good money writing from home. But you will want to consider a few things before you quit your current job. Just as with any position, you need to weigh your options and abilities to make this career work.
How Are My Writing Skills?
It just makes sense that if you want to market your writing, it had better be top notch. But even if you didn´t have the best of times in your English classes in high school and college, this doesn´t mean you´re automatically doomed to failure. There are a number of high quality grammar and composition books available on the market – i.e. Elements of Style by Strunk and White, On Writing Well by William Zinsser, etc. You can use these books to perfect your grammar and your writing style, while also teaching yourself tricks to writing the strongest articles and essays possible. Some beginning writers also find community classes in writing helpful to not only add to their resumes, but also to get into contact with professionals who can help them avoid writing mistakes.Am I Ready to Work Hard?
While assignments are plenty and writers are few, making the market quite accessible, you also need to keep in mind that not everyone starts out writing for Vogue. Most beginning writers will have to send in numerous articles and queries before they even get noticed by editors and publishers. This takes a lot of work and a lot of patience as you´re beginning. One way to help enhance your career and the speed with which you begin your career is to become a ghostwriter on the Internet. While you won´t necessarily have your name on the things you write, you will be able to gain assignments and experience which will boost your chances with the bigger magazines and publishers. Can I Manage the Business Aspect?
Since you´re going to be working for yourself, you´re the one who will be in charge of your payroll, your taxes, and other paperwork that comes up. You will need to get a business license, business accounts, and even a retirement savings plan all in place for yourself – no one else is going to do it for you. Though there are services and software systems that can help you out, this part of your writing business will take up a lot of your time. You need to recognize that this is just as much a part of your writing as typing will be. In addition, you will need to continuously market your services to potential clients, either by calling or emailing potential leads to see if you can write for them. And finally, the most important question to ask yourself as a potential freelance writer is whether or not you have the ability to motivate yourself. Some days are going to be difficult, but you need to stay on top of your deadlines and on top of the quality of your work. If you find you can´t motivate yourself when you´re on your own, but prefer the motivation´s source to be a boss or other type of leader, you might not be the best boss for yourself. Writing is a job, just like any other job. Taking the time to consider all of the options and the tasks you will be required to complete will help you make the best decision for yourself and for your future.* * * * *
