Crisis and Opportunity: Making Change a Good Thing
Submitted by: Aedon Young
July 21, 2009 St. John's, Newfoundland - It was the childhood dream of Aedon Young to be an author. During her adolescence, a teacher evoked a love of acting, French, and rekindled in her the passion for writing. Young studied theatre and worked professionally as an actor for a number of years. After some difficult personal times, she remembered her dear junior high teacher and she concluded it was time for a change.
Moving from one end of the country to the other, Young began to teach junior high French. Meandering through life's detours had brought her to teaching. Little did she predict that her new career would finally provide the enabling environment and stimulus to come to writing.
Young's first novel, "Mara Roams", is about one girl's transition from child to adult. Mara's liminality is further challenged by an alternate dimension, magical happenings, and enigmatic encounters. The story's fantastical elements serve to remind us that crises of the child growing up are no less momentous than the larger global crises that face the world.
Mara, like any curious teenager, deviates from her instincts at times. She finds her profound ideas and her carefree spirit in conflict. When she learns the language of animals and plants, when she speaks to the wind, and when she witnesses real magic, she is ultimately restored. "Mara Roams" reflects the enormous foundational importance of the lives of children and their growth.
