Branding Your Business Now
Submitted by: Lynda Forman
No matter what business you're in, you need to be recognized in order to make money. Think about the Golden Arches, for example. Without even thinking about it, you probably know what company is associated with that image. Or think about the 'swoosh.' When you take the time to brand your business, you create an identity for your products and for your company. No matter what you're selling or how big your customer base it, branding isn't just a flashy sales gimmick; it's a necessity.
Creating a Reputation
You need to choose a symbol or an idea that you want your customers to think of each time your company's name is mentioned. This doesn’t have to be anything complicated or even that clever so long as it works with the company you are running and what you have to offer to the public. For example, if you run a donut shop, you might want to choose a circle for your logo, incorporating that symbol into your signage, your stationery, and your external décor. In doing so, customers who come in begin to think of that symbol whenever they think of your store – and a brand is born.
Making Money from Branding
It seems like the idea of branding would only really work if you were a company that was larger. After all, the more customers you'd have, the more likely you'd be to attract attention. But this is not always the case. As a smaller company, you have a better opportunity with branding as this allows you to test out your ideas on a smaller population first before growing your business. You are more likely to get feedback from your loyal customers in a smaller company and then be able to make changes that make more sense. These customers will then tell their friends about your chances and a brand can be born.
A New Identity
The point of branding is also to create an identity for your company. When someone thinks of 'change,' for example, they would first think about President Obama's campaign. You need to create a clear link between an idea in your company and the way you present your company to the world. This might include adding your symbols of your brand to emails, to commercials, and to anywhere you might be advertising. But it's not just the images you present, but also the attitude behind those symbols. Your company should also act the way the brand encourages you to act. For example, if you want to be a 'fun' company, your staff and your interactions with customers should also be fun. With each reinforcement of your brand, you will create a stronger connection with your customers, which leads to higher profits and larger client bases. Branding might seem to be a hazy marketing idea, but it's actually one of the strongest ways to connect with an audience and with customers. Today, start thinking about how you want your customer to think of you. And from there, a brand will emerge, ready to showcase your company to the world.
