Aedon grew up in Port Coquitlam, a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia. Since the age of 6, she dreamed of being an author. She worked as an actor, producer, and writer in film and theatre for over ten years. She has also been employed as a gymnastics coach, a warehouse receiver, a salon assistant, an inventory controller, a clown, an importing agent, and a model. Currently, Aedon teaches high school French immersion and drama.
She lives in St. John's, Newfoundland with her witty husband, toddler daughter, beloved German Shorthaired Pointer, and troublesome Weimaraner. In her free time, Aedon hikes with her dogs, runs, does Pilates, and practices yoga. Aedon has been training in gymnastics, Pilates, and yoga for over twenty years. She is a certified Level I gymnastics coach. She studied Pilates at the Dianne Miller studio in Vancouver from 1990-1995. Aedon Young has attended workshops on incorporating physical activity into school curriculum, childhood obesity and bullying, and how to coordinate a school wellness programme. She firmly believes that everyone should engage in daily physical activity.
Thank you Aedon for taking the time to answer some questions for us! Please tell us about your novella.
I've just published a novella for young adults called "Mara Roams" as an ebook. It will be available in hardcover in about two months. It is about a young girl who has an accident while riding her bike. Afterwards, she suffers from vertigo and discovers that when she has dizzy spells, she is
able to travel to an alternate dimension. It is really a coming of age story with lots of fantastical elements.
What kind of other works (books, scripts, poems etc.) have you had published?
I did some writing for the NFB (National Film Board of Canada). I had two sets of creative partners: in my theatre company and my film company. Together we co-wrote about 8-10 plays and 2 TV pilots/series.
Is there any aspect to your profession that gets you in touch with your readers directly?
I'm a junior and senior high school teacher. I deal with my target audience 8 hours a day! This gives me great access to how teenagers think and feel.
What will your next project be?
I recently finished an exercise book for postpartum mothers and I am also working on the sequel to "Mara Roams".
Who inspires you on a personal or business level?
Sir Bob Geldof
What type of work is the most rewarding or satisfying for you?
When I feel that I am provoking thought, I am content.
How did you get started as a writer?
When I was six years old, I wrote a story called "Clouse the Mouse". (My German spelling left something to be desired!) It was about a superstar mouse who died without anyone really understanding the mouse behind the celebrity. It was a tragedy. I illustrated it and stapled it like a book.
Which is your favorite book/work published? Is there a favorite?
This is dreadfully difficult. I'd have to say that the most formative and inspirational books for me as a child were the "Chronicles of Prydain" by Lloyd Alexander.
Have you ever had a mentor, or someone who sparked your passion for writing?
My father, most definitely. He has supported my dream to write since I handed him "Clouse the Mouse".
Finally, a most important question: what was the last song you sang out loud when you were by yourself? :)
This will really make you laugh...well, no, if you'd been around, you would have laughed: Beethoven's Symphony no. 9, The Ode to Joy. It sounds great in my head but I still can't speak or write German! Nevertheless, that music is my nirvana.
Thank you Aedon! We wish you great success with your future book projects and Mara Roams!
